What's the difference between a virus & a bacterium?

A virus is a microscopic organism which cannot reproduce outside of its host cell. A bacterium (or single-celled organism) reproduces by splitting itself into two. Viruses can be as small as 20 nanometers, while bacteria can grow up to 1 micron.

Viruses are often spread through contact of infected bodily fluids like saliva, urine or semen. Bacteria can be spread by direct contact with infected objects and surfaces.

Viral infections can also be introduced to our bodies by a variety of cuts, scrapes or bites. They can also be transmitted through the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, rectum, and anus.

Bacteria can enter our bodies through wounds, cuts, scrapes, burns, insect stings, or other breaks in our skin. They may also be introduced into our bodies through food and water as well as soil, dirt, dust, and animals.

Both bacteria and viruses can cause illness. But viruses do not have the ability to multiply within their hosts. Viral infections can only cause diseases in living cells.

Bacteria can spread within the host and cause illness. They can also invade other parts of your body. That's why we need antibiotics to kill them.

What is the working principle of an antibiotic?

Antibiotics kill harmful bacteria. The treatment of bacterial infections is done with antibiotics. There are many different types of antibiotics. Some can be taken orally while others are injected. Others are topically applied.

People who have been exposed may be prescribed antibiotics. To prevent shingles, an oral antibiotic may be prescribed to someone who has had chicken pox. Penicillin might also be administered to someone with strep throat. This will help prevent the possibility of developing pneumonia.

When antibiotics are given to children, they should be given by a doctor. Children are more likely to experience side effects than adults from antibiotics.

The most common side effect of antibiotics is diarrhea. Other possible side effects include stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, allergic reactions, headaches, dizziness, and rashes. These symptoms generally disappear once the treatment has finished.
